Black Box

Dance music act

A black box is a system whose internal workings are hidden or irrelevant—you see inputs and outputs but not the mechanism between.

The term comes from engineering diagrams where unknown components appear as featureless boxes.

In aviation, a black box is the flight recorder that survives crashes, though it's actually orange.

In computing and AI, black box describes algorithms whose decision-making process cannot be inspected or explained: The model works, but it's a black box—we can't tell why it makes the predictions it does.
