Atman

Innermost eternal self

In Hindu philosophy, Atman is the individual soul or innermost self, the eternal essence within each person.

Vedantic traditions teach that Atman is ultimately identical with Brahman, the universal spirit: Realizing Atman is the goal of spiritual practice.

The capitalized form emphasizes the concept's metaphysical significance. (Also written lowercase atman.)
