false self
Mask you wear
A false self is a persona constructed to meet external expectations or protect against emotional vulnerability.
The term comes from psychoanalysis, where it describes a defensive identity that develops when authentic expression feels unsafe.
More broadly, it refers to any inauthentic way of presenting oneself: She spent years performing a false self to please her parents.
The false self masks deeper needs and feelings, often at psychological cost.
