ACEs
Early life hardships
ACEs is an acronym for Adverse Childhood Experiences—traumatic events occurring before age eighteen, including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction like parental addiction or incarceration.
The term comes from a landmark 1998 study linking childhood trauma to adult health problems.
A person's ACE score tallies how many such experiences they endured: Research shows high ACE scores correlate with chronic disease and mental health issues.
