yellow ribbon
Homecoming welcome symbol
A yellow ribbon is a symbol of support for absent loved ones, especially military personnel deployed overseas.
The tradition gained prominence from the 1973 song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" and surged during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis and 1991 Gulf War.
People tie yellow ribbons around trees, wear them as pins, or display them on cars: Yellow ribbons decorated the neighborhood until the troops came home.
