white poppy
Pacifist memorial bloom
A white poppy is a paper flower worn as a symbol of peace, particularly as an alternative to the red poppy of Remembrance Day.
While red poppies honor military dead, white poppies emphasize pacifism and remembrance of all war victims, including civilians.
First distributed by British peace organizations in the 1930s, they remain controversial—some see them as disrespecting veterans, others as a legitimate expression of antiwar sentiment: She wore a white poppy alongside her red one.
