work of fiction

Made-up story

A work of fiction is a narrative created from imagination rather than fact—a novel, short story, film, or other storytelling form where events and characters are invented.

The phrase often appears in disclaimers: Any resemblance to actual persons is coincidental.

Calling something a work of fiction can also dismiss it as fabricated or untrue: His alibi was a complete work of fiction.
