wood splitting

Axe meets timber

Wood splitting is the act of breaking logs into smaller pieces along the grain, typically for firewood.

Unlike cutting across the grain, splitting exploits natural weaknesses in the wood using a maul, axe, or mechanical splitter: We spent the morning splitting wood for winter.

The term also describes the craft of preparing timber by splitting rather than sawing.
