birling

Spinning floating logs

Birling is a competitive sport in which two loggers stand on a floating log and try to spin it with their feet, attempting to knock each other into the water.

The term comes from logging, where workers needed to balance on and maneuver floating logs.

Also called logrolling: The birling competition drew crowds at the lumberjack festival.
