winkles

Small shore mollusks

Winkles are small edible sea snails, especially the common periwinkle, traditionally gathered from rocky shores and eaten in coastal Britain: a bag of winkles from the seaside stall.

To winkle something out is to extract it with difficulty, as one extracts the snail from its shell with a pin: She finally winkled the truth out of him.
