winkle
Small sea snail
A winkle is a small edible sea snail, especially the periwinkle common along European coasts.
The verb winkle, usually followed by out, means to extract something with difficulty—as one pries the meat from a winkle shell with a pin: It took hours to winkle the truth out of him.
British informal.
