windthrow
Gale-felled timber phenomenon
Windthrow is the uprooting or breaking of trees by wind, or the trees themselves felled this way.
Foresters use the term for storm damage that creates gaps in woodland: The hurricane caused extensive windthrow along the ridge.
A windthrow area may be left to regenerate naturally or salvage-logged for timber.
