derecho

Non-rotating severe winds

A derecho is a widespread, long-lived windstorm associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms.

Unlike the rotating winds of a tornado, derecho winds blow in a straight line—the name comes from Spanish for "straight" or "direct." These storms can cause tornado-like damage across hundreds of miles: The derecho knocked out power to two million homes.
