whole rest
Four beats off
A whole rest is a musical symbol indicating silence for the duration of a whole note—typically four beats in common time.
It appears as a small rectangle hanging from the fourth line of the staff.
In any time signature, a whole rest can also indicate a complete measure of silence: The brass section has a whole rest before the finale.
