whizzbang

Fast, impressive thing

A whizzbang was originally a small-caliber shell in World War I, named for the sound it made—a whiz through the air followed by the bang of impact.

The word now means anything impressively fast, powerful, or technologically clever: a whizzbang new gadget, whizzbang special effects.

Often carries a note of exaggerated enthusiasm or mild irony.

Also spelled whiz-bang.
