whitecoat
Newborn harp seal
A whitecoat is a baby harp seal, named for the white fur it has during its first weeks of life.
The term appears frequently in discussions of seal hunting, where whitecoats have been controversial targets: Canada banned commercial hunting of whitecoats in 1987.
Whitecoat also refers informally to a doctor or scientist—anyone who wears a white lab coat.
