Dogs without pedigrees
Mongrels are dogs of mixed or unknown breed—the opposite of purebreds.
The word extends to any hybrid or mixture: a mongrel language cobbled together from three others.
Applied to people, mongrel is usually derogatory, implying impure or mixed ancestry.
Some reclaim it: We're all mongrels if you go back far enough.
