wetnurse
Infant feeding proxy
A wetnurse is a woman who breastfeeds another woman's child.
Before infant formula, wetnurses were essential when mothers couldn't nurse—due to death, illness, or among the wealthy, social convention.
The practice has largely disappeared in developed countries.
Also spelled as two words: wet nurse.
