dry nurse
Non-lactating baby minder
A dry nurse is a woman who cares for an infant but does not breastfeed it, in contrast to a wet nurse who provides breast milk.
The term is largely historical, from eras when nursing arrangements were formally distinguished.
Figuratively, to dry-nurse someone is to guide or supervise them closely without doing the actual work: He dry-nursed the junior analysts through their first deal.
