Lactating describes a female mammal producing milk to feed offspring.
The term applies during the period after giving birth when mammary glands are active: lactating mothers, a lactating cow.
In human contexts, it often appears in medical or practical discussions about breastfeeding: The medication isn't recommended for lactating women.
