wet-rot

Damp wood decay

Wet-rot is fungal decay that attacks damp timber, causing wood to soften, darken, and crumble.

Unlike dry-rot, it requires sustained moisture and doesn't spread as aggressively through buildings.

The bathroom floor had wet-rot from years of leaky plumbing.

The term also works as a verb: The windowsill had wet-rotted beyond repair.
