waxy flexibility

Statue-like limb retention

Waxy flexibility is a psychiatric symptom in which a person's limbs remain in whatever position they are placed by another, like a wax figure being posed.

The limb stays fixed rather than relaxing back to a natural position.

It occurs most characteristically in catatonic states: The patient demonstrated waxy flexibility, her arm remaining raised for several minutes after the examiner lifted it.
