cattle brands
Livestock ownership marks
Cattle brands are distinctive marks burned into livestock hide to identify ownership.
Ranchers register unique designs—letters, numbers, symbols, or combinations—that serve as permanent proof of possession.
Reading brands requires learning their visual language: a tilted letter is "lazy," a letter with legs is "walking," a letter with a curved bottom is "rocking." The ranch's cattle brand has been in the family for four generations.
Brands also appear on equipment, gates, and signs as symbols of ranching identity.
