water protector
Standing Rock activist
A water protector is someone who actively defends water sources from pollution, pipeline construction, or other threats—particularly associated with Indigenous-led environmental movements.
The term emerged prominently during the 2016 Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, where activists rejected the label "protester" in favor of one emphasizing their relationship to the land: Water protectors gathered at the camp to oppose the pipeline.
The framing positions defense of water as sacred duty rather than political protest.
