water gates
Flood control barriers
Water gates are gates or sluices controlling water flow in dams, canals, locks, or irrigation systems.
They regulate water levels and manage flooding: The dam's water gates were opened to release the rising reservoir.
Also, gates providing access to water from land—a doorway opening onto a river or harbor. (Capitalized Watergate refers to the 1970s political scandal.)
