Swimmer-bred hound type
A water dog is a dog bred or trained to retrieve game from water, such as the Portuguese water dog or Spanish water dog.
The term extends to any dog that takes readily to swimming.
Informally, a water dog is a person comfortable in or around water—an experienced sailor, swimmer, or someone who simply loves being in the water: He's been a water dog since childhood.
