watchhouse

Station for sentries

A watchhouse is a building where a guard or watchman is stationed, or historically, where a local police force kept watch and held prisoners temporarily.

The term survives mainly in historical contexts or place names.

In some regions, particularly Australia, watchhouse still refers to a police station's holding facility: He spent the night in the watchhouse after his arrest.
