warm-up laps
Preliminary track rounds
Warm-up laps are circuits completed before a race or timed session begins, allowing drivers or runners to prepare physically and mentally while bringing equipment to optimal operating temperature.
In motorsports, tires and brakes need heat to grip properly; in athletics, muscles need loosening.
The term extends figuratively to any preliminary activity before the main event: Consider the first few meetings just warm-up laps before negotiations begin.
