war bride

Soldier's overseas fiancée

A war bride is a woman who marries a foreign soldier during wartime, typically relocating to his home country after the conflict ends.

The term emerged from World War II, when thousands of European and Asian women married American, British, and other Allied servicemen: My grandmother was a war bride from England.

The phrase can carry connotations of hasty or impulsive marriage under extraordinary circumstances.
