wagonway
Horse-drawn coal route
A wagonway is a track or road designed for wagons, particularly the early wooden or iron rails used in mines and quarries before modern railroads developed.
These primitive railways allowed horses or gravity to move heavy loads of coal, ore, or stone more efficiently than ordinary roads.
Wagonways were especially common in British mining regions during the 17th and 18th centuries and are considered direct precursors to the railway systems that followed.
