visible minority
Racially distinct group
A visible minority is a person whose race or ethnicity marks them as visibly different from the majority population.
The term is used primarily in Canadian government and legal contexts to categorize non-white, non-Indigenous populations for purposes of employment equity and census data: Visible minorities make up over 20 percent of the Canadian population.
Outside Canada, the phrase sounds bureaucratic or clinical.
