virtual pet
Simulated animal friend
A virtual pet is a digital simulation of a pet that requires care and attention.
Users feed, play with, and nurture the creature through a screen—whether on a handheld device like the Tamagotchi, a video game, or a smartphone app.
The pet typically has needs that must be met to keep it healthy and happy: My virtual pet died because I forgot to feed it for three days.
The appeal lies in the emotional attachment without the mess, expense, or real-world consequences of actual pet ownership.
