underwater cave

Flooded rock chamber

An underwater cave is a cave system that is partially or fully submerged in water, found in oceans, lakes, or flooded land formations.

These caves attract specialized divers but are notoriously dangerous due to limited visibility, confined spaces, and the risk of becoming disoriented: Three divers died exploring the underwater cave system.

Some underwater caves were once dry but flooded over geological time, preserving ancient artifacts and fossils.
