underspin
Ball spins backward
Underspin is backward rotation on a ball, causing it to slow down, bounce lower, or stop quickly when it lands.
In tennis, a slice shot creates underspin; in golf, it's the backspin that makes the ball check on the green.
Also called backspin.
The opposite is topspin.
