unceded

Still rightfully owned

Unceded describes land that was never formally surrendered or transferred by its original inhabitants through treaty or agreement.

The term appears almost exclusively in discussions of Indigenous territory: We acknowledge that this university stands on unceded Coast Salish land.

Such acknowledgments recognize that colonial occupation occurred without legal transfer of sovereignty.
