unceded territory
Never formally surrendered
Unceded territory is land that Indigenous peoples never formally surrendered through treaty or agreement, yet which a colonial or national government now claims sovereignty over.
The term appears frequently in Canadian political discourse and Indigenous rights movements: We acknowledge that this event takes place on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples.
Such acknowledgments assert that legal title was never properly transferred, challenging the legitimacy of state control.
