ultra-violence

Beyond normal cruelty

Ultra-violence is extreme, gratuitous violence, especially as depicted in media or committed for its own sake.

The term gained currency from Anthony Burgess's novel *A Clockwork Orange* (1962), where the narrator uses it with relish to describe brutal assaults: a bit of the old ultra-violence.

It implies violence beyond normal bounds—savage, theatrical, often aestheticized.
