tweenie

Between child, adolescent

A tweenie is a child between childhood and adolescence—roughly ages ten to twelve, too old for little-kid things but not yet a teenager.

The word blends "between" and "teen." In older British usage, a tweenie was a housemaid who worked between the cook and the housemaid, assisting both: The tweenie carried trays upstairs and helped in the kitchen.
