tweeny

Between child, teen

Tweeny is an old-fashioned British term for a domestic servant who worked "between" stairs—assisting both the upstairs and downstairs staff in a large household.

The word comes from the servant's in-between status, neither fully a parlor maid nor a kitchen maid.

In contemporary usage, tweeny (also spelled tweenie) more often refers to a child between childhood and adolescence, roughly ages 9-12, essentially a synonym for tween.

The marketing department targets tweenies with colorful packaging.
