turfs

Grass-covered ground patches

Turfs is the plural of turf—grass and the soil beneath it, or areas of ground covered with grass.

The word extends to territory someone controls or claims expertise over: rival gangs defending their turfs, bureaucrats protecting their turfs.

In British English, turfs also works as a verb form: He turfs out the old newspapers.
