tulipomania

Dutch flower craze

Tulipomania refers to the speculative frenzy over tulip bulbs in the Dutch Republic during the 1630s, when prices for certain rare varieties soared to extraordinary heights before crashing dramatically.

The term now applies more broadly to any speculative bubble characterized by irrational enthusiasm and inflated prices for assets of questionable intrinsic value.

Critics compared the crypto boom to tulipomania.

The spelling tulipmania is also common.
