manias
Feverish collective crazes
Manias is the plural of mania—states of intense enthusiasm, obsession, or mental agitation.
In psychiatry, mania refers to episodes of abnormally elevated mood and energy, as in bipolar disorder.
More loosely, manias are crazes or obsessions: tulip mania, Beatlemania.
The word often describes collective frenzies that sweep through populations.
