traumatism

Shock from harm

Traumatism is the physical or psychological condition resulting from trauma—injury, wound, or shock to the body or mind.

The term appears in medical and psychiatric contexts but has largely been replaced by "trauma" in contemporary usage: The patient showed signs of traumatism following the accident.

It can also refer to the process by which trauma produces its effects on the organism.
