retraumatization
Reliving original psychological injury
Retraumatization occurs when a person who has experienced trauma is exposed to situations, stimuli, or experiences that recall the original traumatic event, triggering a renewed stress response.
This can happen through insensitive questioning, medical procedures, legal proceedings, or even well-intentioned therapeutic interventions that inadvertently revisit painful memories.
Survivors of abuse may experience retraumatization when required to recount their experiences repeatedly to different authorities.
The concept is central to trauma-informed care, which seeks to minimize such harm.
