trash-talking

Competitive verbal needling

Trash-talking is the practice of taunting or insulting opponents, typically in sports or competitive contexts, to intimidate them or throw them off their game: The trash-talking between the two boxers intensified at the weigh-in.

It extends beyond athletics to any verbal sparring meant to undermine confidence or provoke a reaction.

As a verb, to trash-talk is to engage in such taunts: He trash-talked his way through the entire match.
