trans fatty acids
Partially hydrogenated oils
Trans fatty acids are unsaturated fats with a particular molecular structure that makes them behave more like saturated fats in the body.
They occur naturally in small amounts in meat and dairy but are primarily created through industrial hydrogenation of vegetable oils.
Trans fats raise harmful cholesterol levels and increase heart disease risk, leading many countries to restrict or ban them in food production.
The FDA required food labels to list trans fatty acids.
