Paris suburbs
Beyond the périphérique
The Paris suburbs are the areas surrounding the city proper, often called the banlieues.
These range from affluent communities to working-class neighborhoods, many with large immigrant populations.
In English media, "Paris suburbs" frequently appears in stories about urban unrest, poverty, or integration challenges: Riots broke out in the Paris suburbs.
The term carries different connotations than American suburbs, which typically suggest middle-class prosperity.
