garden cities
Designed urban communities
Garden cities are planned communities designed to combine the benefits of urban and rural living, featuring residential areas surrounded by greenbelts of agricultural land and open space.
The concept emerged in the late 19th century as a response to overcrowded industrial cities, aiming to create self-sufficient towns with controlled population density and balanced employment opportunities.
The original garden cities inspired suburban planning worldwide.
The term now sometimes refers loosely to any leafy, well-planned residential development.
