torte

Dense Austrian confection

A torte is a rich, dense cake, typically made with ground nuts or breadcrumbs instead of flour and layered with cream, jam, or ganache.

European in origin, tortes are often more elaborate than standard cakes: a Sachertorte from Vienna, a chocolate hazelnut torte.

The word is sometimes used loosely for any fancy layered cake.
