topping out
Hitting the ceiling
Topping out is a construction milestone ceremony held when a building reaches its highest point—traditionally marked by placing a beam, tree, or flag at the top of the structure.
The term extends to any reaching of a peak or maximum: Housing prices appear to be topping out.
To top out is to reach that ceiling or limit: The thermometer topped out at 102 degrees.
